It may not be common knowledge that the Taiwanese ZyXEL (pronounced Zai-cell) has a large range of network products. Among them is the Armor Z2 NBG6817 gaming router which we take out for a spin to write this review.
Anyone who looks at the ZyXEL Armor Z2 NBG6817 will immediately recognize what the designation Gaming is based on. The sharp shapes, black design with golden accents and external antennas are reminiscent of an Italian sports car rather than a router. The looks are nothing to scoff about and the specifications are also good on paper. The Armor Z2 has a total theoretical WiFi speed of 2533 Mbit/s, spread over 800 Mbit/s on the 2.4 GHz band and 1733 Mbit/s on the 5 GHz band.
The router has the MU-MIMO functionality which means that it can communicate with multiple devices on the 5 GHz band simultaneously. This reduces the time for processing one client request at a time in turn to processing them all at once. However, the client also needs to support this technology, which not always the case.
But what does the performance look like? Will we see an enormous dust cloud on the horizon and smell the burned rubber or will we need to call the road assistance? You can buy a ZyXEL Armor Z2 NBG6817 for an average price of 180 pounds / 203 euros in our Price Comparison.
