BenQ EW277HDR review: come for the HDR, stay for the image quality

Inexpensive option with remarkably good colour quality

By

Introduction

This year we have already seen a couple of hdr-monitors, but up until this point they were fairly expensive. If you are looking for a new monitor right now, but still want to be sure of hdr-compatibility, the BenQ EW277HDR is an interesting option. While the combination of size and resolution might not appeal to the imagination, upon further inspection it turns out to be a rather attractive monitor.

The advantages of hdr are probably clear by now, but for those of you that do not know yet: higher maximum brightness, higher contrast, more detail in darker and lighter parts of the image, wider colour space and more colour nuances. That is what hdr promises in a nutshell. Still, it is quite complicated to get hdr to work properly on a computer and the source material that you can watch or experience (videos and games) is limited, but all of that will undoubtedly change in the short term.

BenQ EW277HDR

It creates an interesting challenge for people that are shopping for a new monitor right now: do you spend (even) more in order to be 'future proof', knowing that the definitive hdr-standard is far from set in stone which means that a new standard might be added every month, or do you keep to a standard dynamic range? Or do you simply wait a bit longer?

If the latter is not an option, but if you still want to smell a bit of hdr, you could consider the BenQ EW277HDR. This 27-inch full hd monitor has a very reasonable price, but still offers hdr-rendering and even has a mode to show sdr-image in 'hdr'. To be clear: you should not expect a world of difference when using this mode.

In any case, if you remember that a 27-inch full hd monitor with va- or ips-panel costs at least about 142 pounds / 160 euros to 150 pounds / 170 euros, the 222 pounds / 249 euros that the BenQ EW277HDR costs is not all that much. At this price point you can also purchase a very basic wqhd monitor of the same size, but without hdr. You will also probably not have the same excellent colour quality that this monitor offers, because the BenQ monitor really impressed us.
