ASUS Zenbook Pro UX550 review: an attack on MacBook Pro

Lighter than two kilos, full of top specs

Has Apple monopolized the powerful and luxury laptops market with their MacBook Pro? ASUS enters the competition with their new Zenbook Pro UX550. It is a 15,6 inch powerhouse specs laptop which weighs only 1.9 kilo and will cost you some 1780 pounds / 2000 euros. Is it better than the Mac? We have checked out the competition.

The Zenbook Pro UX550 looks elegant with its black chassis it looks less bling than its famous competitor. At the first sight, you do not see that it is a very special laptop, but once you pick it up, it is clear. The entire housing is made of aluminium and there is no plastic in sight. This contributes to its low weight as well – just 1,86 kilos - is not much for a laptop packed full of high-end technology.

The design makes one think of those understated German performance cars zooming past you on the motorway. You know, the ones where the owner would rather remove all the badges than show off with additional badges and loud exhaust noise. You know it’s fast and packed full of performance but there is nothing that gives it away on the outside. It is a question of taste too, of course.

Under the bonnet is a compilation of things that make the hearts of hardware geeks beat faster. The list starts with a fast Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, complemented by 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. Additionally, ASUS have fitted it with a GTX 1050Ti GPU, so you can play a game or two should you want to.

The laptop is therefore quite versatile and desirable. It is fit to run heavy software and play games for leisure. More details about this impressive bunch of hardware are to be found further in the article. When it comes to the price, you would need some 1780 pounds / 2000 euros in your bank account to get this beauty.
