Samsung C49HG90: decadent thoroughbred in 32:9

Extraordinary gaming monitor offers everything, except a good price per pixel ratio

By

Introduction

With a diagonal of 49 inch the Samsung C49HG90 immediately catches your eye. Everyone that sees this monitor with a 32:9 aspect ratio stops to admire it. Still, this monitor has more to offer than imposing size. For example, it is one of the first HDR-monitors in our test lab – and that is only the tip of the iceberg.

Some time ago this gigantic model in Samsung’s brand new gaming monitor line-up was presented. Visitors of the Hardware.Info Magazine anniversary day were the first in Europe to see it, back in July. Still, it took quite some time before we received a test model, but it is finally here now.

Samsung C49HG90

We should start with the basics. The C49HG90 is 120 cm wide, so you will need quite a large desk. Aside from that the panel has 3840x1080 pixels. The average monitor enthusiast will start smiling when they see the first number, but this smile will quickly disappear when seeing the second. This is basically a half ultra hd-monitor, with about 4 million pixels. If you want to have a lot of vertical work space for photo- or video editing, working with spreadsheets, or simply a lot of multitasking, you are probably better off with a 43:18/21:9 ultra wide quad hd-monitor with 3440x1440 pixels. The C49HG90 is simply not meant for your use case.

This monitor has a single use case and that is gaming. No compromises, enthralling, overwhelming gaming. In the middle of the action on the battlefields of Battlefield, the circuits of F1 2017 or Forza 7, or the endless star systems of Elite Dangerous, with a view that is so wide that even your peripheral vision is mainly drawn to the monitor. The next step is VR, but not everyone is happy with that – and these might even need more compute power. The 4 megapixels of this monitor are fairly doable for, say, a GTX 1060 or RX 580 and especially a GTX 1070 and up. If you want to game at the maximum refresh rate of 144Hz, you might need to install a more powerful graphics card. Because yes, this monitor offers 144Hz and even offers FreeSync support (from 75Hz, so this is mainly an advantage for those that have Vega).

But, there is more. We will tell you all all about it on the next page, but first we need to address a painful fact of this monstrous gaming monitor: it costs 1339 pounds / 1499 euros. If you immediately grabbed a calculator to find out what the price per pixel is: you honestly should not, it does not get any better. This is a Porsche Carrera GTS with red brakes and the exorbitant option package, not a fuel-efficient lease vehicle for your daily commute.
