AMD Radeon RX 550 review: New (entry) card on the block

Not every card is a gamer's card

How does Hardware.Info test graphic cards

We test graphics cards on an Intel Haswell-E based test platform. Specifications of the test platform are:

At this point in time we test 3Dmark Fire Strike, 3Dmark Time Spy and additionally ten games from our core selection. We made a new selection of games recently, based on how new and popular they are and which API they use. Current games are likely to support DirectX 12, either from release or patched in at a later point. Vulkan seems to be very beneficial for performance as well, at least in comparison to its predecessor OpenGL. These ten games are the basis for our 2017 “Performance Score”:

DirectX 11:

  • Far Cry Primal
  • GTA V
  • Rainbow Six: Siege
  • Project Cars
  • The Division
  • Watch Dogs 2

DirectX 12/Vulkan:

  • Battlefield 1
  • Civilization VI
  • Doom
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider

We would normally run these games in six different resolution / settings combinations. Seeing as the Radeon RX 550 won’t be sufficient to run these games in higher quality settings, we will limit ourselves to the following combinations:

  • 1920x1080 (Full HD) Medium / Normal
  • 1920x1080 (Full HD) Highest / Ultra + 4x MSAA

In addition to the average framerate (fps), we will also measure frame times and list the 99th percentile of this for a few games. Click here to read our article where we explain our method and why these values are potentially even more important than fps values.

Based on the scores of the ten games, we calculate the Hardware.Info GPU Performance Score, which is the average framerate for each resolution / setting combination. This GPU Performance Score gives an easy overview of the performance of graphic cards.

For this review we used the Crimson ReLive Edition 17.5.1 driver. In the results tables, AMD cards are coloured red, NVidia is green and the RX550 blue.
