G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB DDR4-3600 CL16 memory review

Hyper quick memory with RGB lighting.

By

Introduction

The current wave of adding RGB lighting to hardware has reached the memory modules as well. It seemed to be an impossible task for a while, as we have only seen RAM with led lights done once before. Only one colour of lighting was possible on it and you had to connect a separate RGB cable per module. G.Skill have tried to do better and introduced their Trident Z RGB RAM which integrates with the ASUS' Aura Sync.

G.Skill have built up their brand in fast RAM preferred by the overclockers. The kit we are looking at today is also one of the faster modules with clock speeds of 3600MHz with CL16 is all but slow. Once you get the modules out of the box, you need to keep track of the RGB ones amid the regular Trident Z modules. The brushed aluminium heat-spreader is still there, but once you connect it to the motherboard, we see the symmetric beam of rainbow coloured lights.

G.Skill’s own software can be used to configure the lighting effects, including several pre-sets. As mentioned before, you can also choose any colours from the Aura Sync software by ASUS. It is also possible to synchronise any of the colours with your motherboard or any of the other components. So far, there is no integration with the software of any other motherboard manufacturer.

The Trident Z RGB-kit runs at 3600MHz standard, with the timings of 16-16-16-36. For this, it needs the 1,35 Volt current, which is common for the fast DDR4 modules. You can easily activate the high speeds with just one click with a XMP 2.0 profile. We have the Samsung B-die modules (full type number K4A8G085WB) in a single-rank, single-sided formation ready, for the best overclocking potential. Further in this review, we are going to test this set-up.

On average, you will pay about 400 pounds / 450 euros for the G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB DDR4-3600 CL16 kit. A 32GB kit with lower speeds, you can get for about 268 pounds / 300 euros, so the price is quite considerable in comparison. Other DDR4-3600 with CL16 can be found for 358 pounds / 400 euros, while the price difference of the G.Skill kits with and without the RGB lighting is only 13 pounds / 15 euros. Therefore, you do not pay all that much purely for the LEDs. Just like pretty much any of the RAM manufacturers these days, G.Skill offers a lifelong warranty on their products.
