Intel Core i9 7980XE / 7960X review: Intel back in the lead with 18 cores

New Skylake-X processors go up against AMD Threadripper

Benchmarks: video- and audio-encoding (x264, x265 and Flac)

By using Staxrip we convert Full HD video to H.264 or H.265. For both we use the commonly used x264 and x265 codes, but for the processors with built-in GPU we also run the tests using the Intel QuickSync and AMD VCE encoders. Aside from that we also measure how long it takes to convert an hour worth of uncompressed audio to Flac.

Intel's 16-core CPU is practically as fast as AMD's 16-core top model with the x264 codec. The 18-core Core i9 7980XE sets a new record with nearly 200 fps. With x265 the new Skylake-X processors take a big lead and the 7980XE is about 37% faster than the fastest Threadripper. Flac is mostly single-threaded, but here the new CPUs also show excellent results.
