Intel Core i9 7980XE / 7960X review: Intel back in the lead with 18 cores

New Skylake-X processors go up against AMD Threadripper

Benchmarks: content creation (Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Premiere)

In order to analyze the performance of the processors for content creation, we perform several diverse tests using Adobe software.

In Adobe Lightroom 6 we export a big amount of RAW-photos to JPEG with diverse effects. In Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 we perform two tests. First, we measure how long it takes to perform commonly used edits on an image using a script. In the second test we measure how long it takes to convert several high resolution photos to a panorama. In our Adobe Premiere Pro 2017 benchmarks we determine how long it takes to export a fragment of Hardware.Info TV in 4k-resolution. This uses four source channels, each with colour correction and other diverse effects..

Lightroom is only multi-threaded to a certain extent. The 7980XE and 7960X set new record scores, but the difference with CPUs that have slightly less cores is very limited. However, in the Photoshop benchmark the difference is significant: while it takes the 7900X nearly a minute to complete our script, the 7980XE completes our script in only 45 seconds. The panorama is faster on the 7900X; the reason for this is probably the higher single-core Turbo, although the difference is remarkable - something that we will dive into later. With the rendering of Hardware.Info TV, Threadripper took the lead. And it has to be said: AMD manages to maintain the lead.
