While the different turbo technologies keep getting more advanced, the actual performance during gaming depends a lot on whether or not the cooling is adequate enough to keep the clockspeed at a high level. After all, if the card lowers the clock frequency after a few minutes of gaming, the performance will suffer from this. That is why we run the throttling test. It will show if the advertised performance will be achievable after a longer period of gaming.
The throttling test consists of running our F1 2015 benchmark seventeen times, taking about half an hour. Meanwhile we keep an eye on the clock speeds and temperatures by writing them to a log file every second. Afterwards we analyze this data, with the charts below as the end result.
Radeon RX 570
With the RX 570s we find that all models keep their initial and specified boost speed. ASUS is the fastest at exactly 1300 MHz, but Gigabyte and MSI are not far behind.
Therefore the table below shows no surprises.

Radeon RX 580
With the Radeon RX 580s we see more variation. The ASUS Strix OC and the MSI Gaming X have the lowest speeds, where the MSI seems to be having throttling issues. The models with an XTR-chip clearly achieve higher speeds, but the regular Sapphire Nitro+ ends up at a higher speed than the Limited Edition with an XTR-chip; with that it is even the fastest of all.
