Intel B250/H270 motherboards round-up: affordable basis for Kaby Lake

Seventh generation Core-boards without empty bank account

A high-end motherboard with a bunch of features and a cool design is of course nice to have, but certainly not a necessity for every use case. Fortunately you have a lot to choose from if you are shopping on a budget. However, there are still models that we can recommend more than others.

The Gigabyte B250M-DS3H is by far the cheapest motherboard in this round-up. It is available for about 72 pounds / 80 euros, but in order to reach this price the manufacturer had to leave out some crucial features, such as the power circuit. Unless you absolutely cannot spend more, we would advise you to spend a little bit extra.

ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI all offer a board with an average price of about 89 pounds / 100 euros. The Strix B2500G Gaming offers the best audio quality and is the only board to offer two M.2-slots, but it does not have USB 3.1 and only comes with two fan connectors. In our opinion this is a serious hit to the practical usability of this board. Because of this, the award goes to MSI that offers the best basis with the B250M Mortar and is the only board to have a DisplayPort-output. If you really want USB 3.1, the Gigabyte B250-HD3P is an alternative, although the overall image of the MSI is more convincing in our opinion.

A segment above that we find that the compromises made are smaller. At 112 pounds / 125 euros the Gigabyte H270 Gaming 3 is our favorite, which is characterized by USB 3.1, more than enough fan connectors and a decent power circuit. Furthermore we are now in the segment where headers for rgb-ledstrips are standard. The only downside is the absence of an S/PDIF-output, but at this price we can forget about that minor downside.

The MSI H270 Gaming M3 is a board without compromises, while it is still clearly cheaper than Z270-boards that offer the same level of functionality and features. An extensive power circuit, more than enough fan headers, excellent audio quality and both fast as well as many USB-connectors: we have absolutely nothing left to complain about. If you are not interested in overclocking and have no aspirations to use multiple graphics cards, this is the most luxurious board you can purchase.
