Intel Core i9 7900X Skylake-X & Core i7 7740X Kaby Lake-X review: rushed release raises the bar

Intel reinforces lead and introduces most unnecessary CPU ever

Benchmarks: video- and audio-encoding (x264, x265 and Flac)

By using Staxrip we convert Full HD video to H.264 or H.265. For both we use the commonly used x264 and x265 codes, but for the processors with built-in GPU we also run the tests using the Intel QuickSync and AMD VCE encoders. Aside from that we also measure how long it takes to convert an hour worth of uncompressed audio to Flac.

Especially the x264-codec is able to utilize the fast ten cores of the Core i9-processor. It is the first chip that exceeds 150 fps. In x265 the difference with the i7 6950X is not as big, but it is still firmly in first place. Converting audio is mostly influenced by single-threaded performance; here the i7 7740X and 7700K perform better.
