How Hardware.Info tests GPUs

We test graphics cards on a testing system based on the Haswell-E platform. The exact specifications are as follows:

We test the graphics cards with 3DMark Fire Strike, 3DMark Time Spy, along with ten core games. For this launch, we have made a new selection of games, looking particular at their popularity and the API they use. Most games being released nowadays either come with DirectX 12-support built-in, or they are patched at some later date to provide this anyway. Vulkan also has a positive impact on the performance, compared to its indirect predecessor OpenGL. These ten games form the basis of our Performance score 2017:

DirectX 11:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike
  • Far Cry Primal
  • GTA V
  • Rainbow Six: Siege
  • Project Cars
  • The Division
  • Watch Dogs 2

DirectX 12/Vulkan:

  • 3DMark Time Spy
  • Battlefield 1
  • Civilization VI
  • Doom
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider

We test all these games at three different resolutions and two different quality settings:

  • 1920x1080 (Full HD) Medium / Normal
  • 1920x1080 (Full HD) Highest / Ultra + 4x MSAA
  • 2560x1440 (WQHD) Medium / Normal
  • 2560x1440 (WQHD) Highest / Ultra
  • 3840x2160 (Ultra HD) Medium / Normal
  • 3840x2160 (Ultra HD) Highest / Ultra + 4x MSAA

Nvidia Titan X (Pascal)

Apart from the average framerate (fps) we also measure the frametimes where it is possible, and we show the values for the 99th percentile.

Based on the score of these ten games, we calculate the Hardware.Info GPU Performance Score, which in practice is the average of the framerates of the resolutions and settings. This GPU Performance Score is a shorthand for the performance of the various cards.

We used driverversion GeForce 378.78 for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.
