G.Skill Trident Z 16GB DDR4-3866 CL18 kit memory review

Ultimate memory for overclockers

A short while ago we discussed fourteen DDR4 memory kits from all segments, the fastest of which were clocked at 3200 or 3333 MHz. G.Skill sent us a new set last month, with a clock speed of no less than 3866 MHz: a huge stop forward at once. Can you go even higher as an overclocker?

The full name of the kit we received is F4-3866C18D-16GTZ and it is a part of the Trident Z-series, the most high-end memory series of G.Skill. The kit contains a set of two modules of 8 GB each, which means they offer a total capacity of 16 GB. Our sample features silver heat spreaders with a brushed look and red accents, however there are also silver/white and black/white versions.

Overclockers are probably more interested in what's under the hood. We find chips of the type K4A8G085WB BCPB, which are made by Samsung. They're also known as 'B-dies'. Together with the E-dies, this type of chip is known as one of the overclocking modules.

Of course this kit supports XMP, with the standard profile running at 3866 MHz with CL18-19-19-39-2T at the 'standard' voltage of 1.35 volts. These are fairly tight timings for this clock frequency, however we wonder if we can squeeze even more performance out of these modules...
