Seagate Enterprise Capacity 10TB review: a new high

A new breakthrough in storage capacity

By

Introduction

About a year ago, we covered the first hard disk with a storage capacity of 8 TB. The desire for more storage capacity in big datacenters is still there, making the manufacturers of mechanical drives work hard on improving the data density. Once again, Seagate is the first to achieve a new milestone: today we test the Enterprise Capacity 10TB.

In contrast to the Archive HDD-series, Shingled Magnetic Recording – or SMR in short – is not used here. This technology places the data closer to each other than the width of the write head, meaning there are always a few ‘stripes’ of data that have to be rewritten after an operation. This results in reduced performance and theoretically also has a negative impact on the durability of the drive.

The Enterprise Capacity-drive – meant for business purposes, as the name suggests – is simply based on PMR, the typical way drives are designed. Instead of implementing SMR, Seagate just added more platters to increase the data density. There are seven platters of about 1.4 TB each in the drive, with two heads each. In order to place that many platters inside a 3.5”-case, the drives are hermetically sealed and have been filled with helium.

The use of helium is quite remarkable. In 2014, Seagate emphasized that it was not planning to produce drives filled with helium, as these would be too expensive to produce. It is likely that the postponement of HAMR, a new technology that promises to increase the data density, has played a part in this change of heart.

On the next page we will cover the specifications of the Enterprise Capacity 10TB, but below you can find the up-to-date prices.
