Six 32-inch Ultra HD monitor review: serious business

The best choice for a large screen with a lot of pixels

By

Eizo EV3237

Eizo introduced their Ultra HD screen a bit later than most other manufacturers. Eizo boasts their own custom made electronics for the screen, and these obviously take a bit longer to develop than off the shelf parts. The EcoView EV3237 is the most expensive screen in this test, but not without reason. The build quality of the screen instantly stands out, materials and attention to detail are both excellent and the EV3237 is a very solid screen. It is available in two colours, black and grey, and comes with a 5 year on site warranty, something no other manufacturer in this test offers.

Eizo uses a bespoke stand, that has the hinge in the vertical pillar in stead of between the stand and the screen as in more common. This makes it possible to tilt the screen a lot further than other ones, but even at the most extreme angle the screen never looks fragile. The height adjustment is easy and moves very lightly, but rotating the screen is not a possibility unfortunately.

The EV3237 sports a DVI-D, a HDMI 1.4 and two DisplayPort connections. HDMI 2.0 is not available, but that is the case in most of the screens featured in this test. The screen also has a USB 3.0 hub with three downstream and one upstream port, an audio in connection and built in speakers.

The menu of the EV3237 offers a large amount of settings, but does look rather plain. If you should wish to do so the  ScreenManager Pro software allows all settings to be changed through Windows, and has the possibility to save settings for specific applications, causing the monitor to instantly set itself to the right setting as soon as the application is opened. There is a ambient light sensor that offers the possibility to automatically adjust brightness settings to the environment and a sensor that detects if someone is actually in front of the screen. If no user is there, the screen will turn itself off. Picture-in-Picture and Picture-by-Picture are both available, and it is worth mentioning that the colour temperature can be set between 4000 en 10.000 K in steps of 500 Kelvin.

Eizo has a flicker free backlight with a hybrid brightness adjustment, if the brightness is set very low this is controlled through the PWM, but with higher settings the adjustments are done through the voltage. The IPS panel comes calibrated out of the factory.

Gamma measurement

The calibration of the screen is evident in our tests, the grey curve is more than good, red and blue are showing a slight deviation of the ideal curve but this is compensated by the higher gamma ranges, and the actual deviation is only small. from a 70% white screen we can spot some light green hues, but again it is hardly noticeable. We could not see any larger difference on the gamma curve than 0.05 from the ideal 2.2 points, and the average ended up being 2.3. The average grey deviation ended up at 2,4 mΔuv, an excellent result.

Colour reproduction

The Eizo produces excellent results in this test as well, but we can see that green is clearly over saturated. The other values are not as ideal as we would like them to see, but the overall reproduction is very good and the colour temperature ends up on an almost ideal 6500K. The average deviation is 3,7 mΔuv, but because of the individual colour settings we wonder if this would actually be visible in real life. For most applications the EV3237 is more than adequate when in comes out of the box and requires little changes.

Eizo aims its screen mostly at the higher business end of the market, evident in the build quality and overall presentation and long warranty of this screen, but also by its price. This is a lot higher than most consumer models as parts have to be available longer than with other models, even though Eizo claims that their screens rarely show a fault. We can not verify these claims, but can understand that this would warrant a price of around £ 1600. The price makes it a screen that the average home user would never consider, but if you need a UHD screen for business use there is little competition.
