Seagate Desktop HDD.15 4TB / Barracuda XT 4TB review

Comparison to 14 other 2TB+ hard disks



When Seagate around 2011/2012 launched its new generation Barracuda 7200.14 hard disks, we were very impressed. The 2TB model we first tested performed great, as did the 1TB and 3TB versions. Hitachi and Western Digital introduced 4TB disks a long time ago, so we were waiting on the 4TB version of the Barracuda 7200.14. In vain, it turns out, it doesn't even appear to be in the planning. However, Seagate has a number of other 4TB disks, including the Desktop HDD.15 4TB and the Barracuda XT 4TB. Today we take a closer look at both.

The Desktop HDD.15 4TB is Seagate's official 4TB disk for use in desktop PCs. Unlike the 7200.14 disks, it runs at 5900 rpm, which likely means lower performance. The high data-density does make the Desktop HDD.15 4TB somewhat faster than most 5400/5900 rpm disks. Just like the 7200.14 disks, the Desktop HDD.15 contains 1TB platters, four of them in this case. It of course has a Serial ATA 600 interface and there is 64 MB of cache memory. According to the specs, the disk can read up to 180 MB/s, and write up to  146 MB/s. It comes with a two-year factory warranty. The price of 4.1 eurocents per GB is very affordable.

Seagate does have a 7200 rpm 4TB disk, but it's only on sale in the US. We found it in a NAS we tested, the Seagate Barracuda XT 4TB. The Barracuda XT has five 800GB platters, which is the main reason for why its performance isn't on the level of the 7200.14 disks.
