Conclusion

The Crucial M500 doesn't set any new benchmark records, but that's also not what Crucial set out to do. Nevertheless, the Crucial M500 480 GB is one of the fastest SSDs in this segment. It has an AS SSD score of more than 1040 points and a PCMark Vantage score of more than 70,000 points, and these are outstanding numbers. Moreover, the Crucial M500 480 GB has a very competitive price, and is affordably priced for this segment. Crucial has indicated that prices will likely go down even more in the coming weeks and months. And if they want to go toe-to-toe with the Samsung 840 (not Pro), that additional drop will be necessary. On the other hand, the benchmark scores show that the Crucial M500 480GB is slightly faster than the Samsung 840 500GB on average. Click here for a comparison table. The Samsung 840 tends to be faster at reading, and the Crucial M500 at writing.

We are eager to find out the performance of the 240 GB model, since that's the one that will likely be the most popular in the beginning. We also have more to compare with in that category, and it will be interesting to see how the Crucial M500 stacks up to the OCZ Vector or the Plextor M5 Pro.

The M500 480 GB earns the Hardware.Info Silver Award due to the excellent performance and low price.
