They cost about the same, but which one is the fastest?

By

Far Cry 3

In Far Cry 3 in Full HD with Medium settings the Radeon HD 7870 and GTX 660 have similar average framerates, with AMD at 80.2 fps and Nvidia at 84.3 fps. Both cards exhibit some peaks in the render times of individual frames, but both AMD has more of them and they are higher. This game really has some stutters with AMD cards. Nvidia gets a frametime score of 17.6 ms, and AMD 24.6 ms.

The frametime results for Far Cry 3 on Ultra settings isĀ the example for why this test has added value. The average framerate is about the same, with 31.1 fps for Nvidia and 31.3 fps for AMD. In the chart with the frametime results the average is on the same level, but AMD's card has much bigger peaks, and you notice these in practice. The 42.8 ms frametime score for the Nvidia card also isn't great, but it's much better than what the 7870 GHz Edition scores.
