ASUS Ares II Crossfire X review: the most extreme graphics card times two

Two overclocked Radeon HD 7970s on a single card

ASUS claims that the Ares II is twice as fast as the Radeon HD 7970 due to the higher clock speed, but also that it's faster than Nvidia's GeForce GTX 690. To find out if ASUS is correct we tested the card on our testing rig that consists of an Intel Core i7 3960X (Sandy Bridge-E) processor, an ASUS P7X79 Pro motherboard, 16 GB Corsair DDR3-1600 RAM, a Samsung Spinpoint F1 hard disk and a Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1200 watt power supply. All tests were done in Windows 7 x64.

We ran the standard benchmarks we use to test AMD and Nvidia graphics cards in 1920x1080 resolution. We tested games on "normal" settings and also on the best possible settings (highest/ extreme/ ultra). We enabled 4x AA for the test on the highest settings, when possible.

The driver we used for the test was the Catalyst Driver version 12.11. In the charts on the following pages the Ares II is marked in blue, AMD cards are red and Nvidia cards are green. We included the results of previously tested Radeon HD 7970, GeForce GTX 680 and GeForce GTX 690 cards.
