Yesterday we ran into Synology during CES. The popular NAS brand is about to launch the latest version of its NAS operating system Disk Station Manager. An early version of DSM 5.0 is being shown to the public, and unfortunately our demo was cut short due to the lack of an internet connection.
In the new firmware the Quick Connect technology is completely integrated into the software. That means that all features are easier to access from outside your own network. When you first install DSM 5.0, a Quick Connect ID is created in order to set up the remote access.
Via Cloud Station you can sync data between various DiskStations and Rackstations in order to always have access to your home and work files. It's easy to manage more than one Diskstation from the software.
The design is clear and more well-organised. Administrators can control the access privileges, such as only letting a user make changes to his or her own files. Rules can be set even for sub-folders. Media streaming is possible to Chromecast and Samsung Smart TV.
