Pioneer has announced the BDR-XU02J, world's smallest and thinnest BDXL writer, or so the manufacturer claims. The external optic drive is sized 133 x 133 x 12 millimetres and weighs 245 grams. The USB 2.0-connector is used for both data transfer and power. To keep the dimensions are low as they are, the drive is of the 'slot-loading' type.

Discs are written at speeds of 2x (BD-RE), 4x (BD-R) TL/QL, and 6x (BD-R) DL. The drive has a recommended price of $266 (£165) and will initially be available in Japan only.
