Installing Windows on a RAID array

Installing Windows on a RAID setup is different to a normal installation. Firstly the system will need a floppy drive, as the drivers for the SATA controller have to be loaded before the initial Windows setup. The CD that comes with the motherboard will have a utility on it to create the driver disks for your Windows installation. Check the manual of your motherboard where to find these drivers.

When the floppy disk is ready the system can be booted, and start up with the Windows CD. Immediately at the beginning a message "Press F6 if you need to install a 3rd party SCSI or RAID driver" will appear. When it does, immediately press F6.

Windows will start looking for the drivers, but will not be able to find them. The following screen will appear:

Press "S", as you have the floppy disk with the drivers, and install the drivers. Some extra attention is needed when using an nVidia motherboard, as you will need to install two drivers. Both the RAID Class driver and the storage controller driver have to be installed prior to continuing the Windows setup. The rest of the installation will continue as it would on a system with one drive
