Introduction

fourstackedhddsWhenever users are purchasing a new hard drive it seems that there is an unlimited amount of space available once the drive is installed. However, after a little while it seems that all that space has disappeared again, and you never have enough space.

When you are looking for a new hard drive the choice is enormous, both internal and external drives are available in all shapes and sizes. An internal drive is meant to be used in a desktop PC; an external one can also be used as a device to exchange large amounts of data between computers. Hardware.Info offers the possibility to view and compare the specifications of numerous hard drives in our product database.

Internal hard drives are available in the standard 3.5 inch size, which is normally used in desktop PCs, and in 2.5 inch, the format for laptops. The same sizes are used in external drives; usually, the bigger, bulky ones use a 3.5 inch drive, where the smaller or more compact models use a 2.5 inch drive. Our database even contains a drive that is only 0.85 inch, small enough to be used as a key ring. The biggest advantage of smaller drives is that they can be fed through USB or FireWire connections, and do not need an external power supply. This feature makes these drives very suitable for use with laptops or notebooks.
