Zotac GeForce GTX 970 AMP! Extreme Edition review: GTX 970 for overclockers

Extreme GeForce GTX 970 card

Cooling, noise levels, and power consumption

We measure the temperatures of video cards after two iterations of our Metro Last Light benchmark, using GPU-Z, which shows the temperatures that are reported by the drivers.

The gargantuan cooler does not disappoint, as Zotac's board remains slightly cooler than the GTX 970 models by ASUS and MSI.

We measure the noise levels of video cards within a sound proof box, both when idle and under load. In either case, we measure from a distance of 10 centimeters, directing our sound level meter at the video card at an oblique angle. The load test is the average of a 1 minute period, measured during an extended 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme run, after the card has been warmed up for some 10 minutes using the same benchmark.

Competing with ASUS and MSI is difficult when idle, as their cards are completely silent under these conditions. We measure 37.2 dB(A) for Zotac's card, which is slightly louder than Nvidia's reference cooler included on the regular ASUS GeForce GTX 980. This is not particularly loud, but it certainly isn't completely quiet either.

Under load we measure 42.8 dB(A), which is significantly quieter than Nvidia's reference cooler, but falls short of ASUS' and MSI's coolers.

Last up is power consumption, which is a bit higher than that of the competition when idle, but perfectly acceptable during the Metro benchmark.
