Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC review: 280X with WindForce cooler

Tested and compared with 5 other Radeon R9 280X cards.

Introduction

Today we're taking a closer look at Gigabyte's R9 280X graphics card, the Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC or GV-R928XOC-3GD. We compared it to five other Radeon R9 280X video cards we tested previously.

If you want to read about how the Radeon R9 280X compares to other cards, please have a look at our original review. In a nutshell, the R9 280X is a new version of the Radeon HD 7970. Priced at around £270, it offers excellent bang for your buck.

Gigabyte's version is equipped with a special dual-slot cooler with three 8cm fans. Below it are three heatsinks that are interconnected via four heatpipes. Using three instead of the traditional two fans can in theory make the card run more silent as they don't have to spin as fast for the same level of cooling.

Like most other R9 280X cards we've tested, the Gigabyte is overclocked as its name indicates. The GPU runs at 1100 MHz, 10 percent faster than a stock R9 280X. That's the same speed as the ASUS Radeon Matrix Platinum R9280X-P-3GD5 and XFX Radeon R9 280X Double Dissipation Black OC 3GB. The Sapphire Radeon R9 280X Toxic 3GB remains the fastest R9 280X we've tested.

The card has the standard 3GB GDDR5 video memory, with the stock clock speed of 1500 MHz.

It's striking that the card only has one DVI port, whereas all the other R9 280X cards we tested have two. Gigabyte likely did this in order to create more room for airflow inside. The other connectors are two mini-DisplayPorts and an HDMI port.

The PCB has two Crossfire connectors for combining cards, and it's powered by a PEG6 and PEG8 connector.

The card is available for an average of € 293 (£ 235) which is sharp, the second most affordable R9 280X we've tested. Only the ASUS Radeon Matrix Platinum R9280X-P-3GD5 costs less, the others are significantly more expensive.
