Inno3D GeForce GTX 770 / 780 iChill Accelero Hybrid review: liquid-cooled GTX

GeForce GTX 770 and 780 with built-in liquid cooling

By ,

Introduction

We've tested a number of Inno3D video cards in recent months, but this is the first time we see the iChill Accelero Hybrid series that has built-in liquid cooling. We tested the GTX 770 and 780 versions.

On paper, the idea of integrating liquid cooling on graphics cards makes a lot of sense. The clock frequency is mainly limited by the temperature, so better cooling implies higher speeds. It can also lower the overall temperature of your chassis since the fans of a liquid-cooled video card blow the air out of the chassis, instead of inside.

Like the name says, the Accelero Hybrid cards have a hybrid cooler. On the card there's a heatsink with a fan behind it, in order to cool the PWMs and the memory chips. Attached to the GPU is a liquid cooling heatsink with pump connected to a 120mm radiator equipped with a fan. Asetek is responsible for the design of the cooler, and they're considered experts on the subject. The three-slot cooler is identical on both cards.

The Inno3D GeForce GTX 770 iChill Accelero Hybrid 4 GB has 4GB of video memory, which is pretty unique considering most GTX 770 cards have 2GB. The GPU is clocked at 1163 MHz with a 1215 MHz Boost clock. The memory clock frequency is 1820 MHz. The standard GeForce GTX 770 reference card was clocked at 1046 MHz and 1753 MHz for the memory. Compared to the other GTX 770s we've tested, this Inno3D card has both the highest GPU and memory clock frequencies. Monitor connectors consist of two DVI ports, HDMI and DisplayPort. The card is very expensive at €556 (£465), nearly twice that of a standard air-cooled GTX 770 with 2 GB of memory.

The Inno3D GeForce GTX 780 iChill Accelero Hybrid 3GB has the standard amount of video memory but has been significantly overclocked with the GPU at 1020 MHz and a 1059 MHz Boost clock. The memory is clocked at 1570 MHz geklokt, which is higher than all GTX 780s we've tested. Monitor connectors are again two DVI port, HDMI and a DisplayPort. It's also a very expensive card priced at €688 (£575). For that amount of money you can easily find an air-cooled GeForce GTX 780 Ti.
