Intel Core i3 4330 / i5 4440 review: affordable Haswells

Affordable Intel processors compared to similar AMD chips.

By

Introduction

In June Intel introduced its Haswell processors, but not all of them were released at the same time. The first dual-core Core i3 CPUs have now hit stores, and today we'll take a closer look at the Core i5 4440 and Core i3 4330.

If you missed our original coverage of the fourth generation Core processors, you can find that here. The initial launch included laptop Core i7s and desktop Core i7s and Core i5s. Both platforms recently received a number of new processors.

New Core i3s and Pentiums

The table below contains all Haswell processors currently available for desktop PCs. With the exception of the special Core i7 4770R with GT3e GPU, they all use the Socket 1150 processor socket and are compatible with motherboard using the Intel Z87, H87, B85 or H81 chipset. Processors that were unveiled after the June launch have a star () next to their name.

At the top there's the new Core i7 4771. It has the same clock frequency as the Core i7 4770K but doesn't have an unlocked multiplier. The i7 4771 is cheaper than an i7 4770K and a but more expensive than the i7 4770.

The new Core i5s are the i5 4440 and 4440S. The i5 4440 is one of the two processors we tested for this article, and it's a 100 MHz faster version of the Core i5 4430 we also tested. It's a quad-core CPU with Turbo but no HyperThreading. It's clocked at 3.1 GHz, with a Turbo of up to 3.3 GHz. It has a TDP of 8$W. The Core i5 4440S is a new i5 with a TDP of 65W and a clock frequency of 2.,8 GHz.

The Core i3s are the first dual-core desktop Haswell processors, even if the OS will think they're quad-core thanks to HyperThreading. The new Core i3s don't have features like vPro, Transactional Memory (TSX) and Intels virtualisation technology (VT-d). The most high-end model is the Core i3 4340, clocked at 3.6 GHz. We tested the 100 MHz slower Core i3 4330. The standard Core i3s have a TDP of 54 W, and the slower T models have a TDP of 35 W.

Intel has also released Haswell Pentium processors. They're dual core and don't have Turbo or HyperThreading. The Pentium chips have an integrated GPU called the GT1 which contains six execution units. The fastest version, the G3430, is clocked at 3.3 GHz. The standard Pentiums have a TDP of 54 W and the Pentium T models have a TDP of 35 W.

Tested: i5 4440 and i3 4330

We tested two of the new processors, the Core i5 4440 and the Core i3 4330. The Core i5 4440 has an average price of £142 / €169, pitting it against AMD's FX-8350 in terms of pricing.

The Core i3 4330 has an average price of £106 / €127 which is about the same as AMD's fastest APU, the AMD A10-6800K. That A10 and the Core i3 will make a nice comparison.
