Seagate is one of the two big traditional hard disk manufacturers, which in the last couple years has been moving out of its comfort zone of internal hard disks. You can find external hard disks carrying the Seagate name, but also NAS devices. It wants to offer professional storage solutions as well, and the Seagate Business Storage 8-Bay Rackmount NAS (R8) we're taking a closer look at today is a perfect example. It's a 1U rack-mounted NAS with room for eight disks, which is a very compact design. Most other brands only offer four-disk 1U racks.
Seagate has made other business-oriented NAS devices before, but the R8 is different in terms of both hardware and software. The firmware and innovative design reminds us a bit of the French company LaCie, which was acquired by Seagate. That's no surprise considering the people responsible for LaCie's NAS devices are behind the design of the R8, a product of the new Seagate design center in Paris. The operating system of the R8 is also based on the one found in many LaCie NAS devices.
