MSI N660 Gaming Review: affordable and silent GeForce GTX 660

Introduction

MSI introduced a new N660 Gaming GeForce GTX 660 graphics card to replace the N660 TwinFrozr. The design fits perfectly together with MSI's latest gaming motherboards. We took a closer look to see how fast the new card is. 

We've tested GeForce GTX 660 cards before from MSI, and we especially liked the standard N660. It was affordable and had a very silent cooler, and it earned the Hardware.Info Silver Award at the time. We also tested the TwinFrozr version of the N660, which had a more deluxe cooler and better cooler performance. That one will now be replaced by the N660 Gaming, the subject of today's review. 


MSI N660 Gaming 2GD5/OC

MSI wants to give its gaming products a cohesive look and feel, in order to establish a clear line of products. The black and red cooler on the N660 Gaming follows that concept at matches perfectly with MSI's new gaming motherboards such as the Z87-G45 Gaming. The cooler is based on the TwinFrozr design and has two fans and two thick heatpipes. 

The clock frequencies of the N660 Gaming are a little lower than those of the TwinFrozr card. The GPU runs at 1006 MHz with a 1072 MHz Boost clock. The 2GB Elpida GDDR5 video memory runs at the standard clock frequency prescribed by Nvidia of 1502 MHz.

Monitor connectors consist of DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort. Of course there's an SLI connector, and a 6-pin PEG connector. 

MSI N660 Gaming 2GD5/OC

The MSI N660 Gaming will have a recommended retail price of $ 190 (£119). That's roughly the same as the current TwinFrozr, and slightly more expensive than the standard N660.

We tested it in the same manner as earlier GeForce GTX 660s from MSI and other manufacturers, so we have plenty to compare with.
