At its event in Korea, Samsung just introduced the new 840 EVO series of SSDs. It's set to replace existing 840 SSDs, will have capacities of up to 1 TB and will be capable of much higher write speeds.
The Samsung 840 EVO SSDs contain what Samsung calls '10nm class' ToggleNAND TLC-flash memory (likely 19nm) with 128 gigabit per die. The 840 EVO comes in five versions:120 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB and 1 TB. A technology called TurboWrite increases the write speed. 250 GB and larger models have a maximum write speed of 520 MB/s, which is more than twice as fast as the Samsung 840 250 GB. The 120 GB model has a maximum write speed of 410 MB/s, more than three times faster than the Samsung 840 SSD 120 GB.
The EVO drives comes with new software as well. Samsung has developed a tool that can use unused RAM as cache for the SSD. The Korean company also improved its data-migration software. The latest version allows you to skip certain files or folders when you migrate, which makes it easier to copy a larger hard disk to a smaller SSD.
Samsung has yet to release exact prices for the new SSDs, but they indicated they will be on the same level as the current 840 series.
