ASUS Taichi 31 review: two sides of the story

Two screens, one laptop

By

Introduction

ASUS is really on a roll lately when it comes to introducing innovative products. They've got quite the product line-up, including the Padfone, the Fonepad, the Transformer All-in-one, the ASUS Transformer Book and the Vivobook X202E. In that same category is the Taichi, which is an Ultrabook with two screens. Today we will take a closer look at the bigger version, the Taichi 31 which has two 13.3-inch Full HD displays.

Many laptop manufacturers are still holding on to the aging TN panels with just 1366x768 resolution, but ASUS used two Full HD IPS panels for the Taichi. They're not identical, as the one on the inside does not have the touch layer the one on the outside has. So when you fold down the screens, you basically have a large, thick tablet. Flip it up, and you have an Ultrabook. The screen on the outside with the touch layer also is more glossy than the one on the inside, the 'laptop' screen.

You could say that the inside is the more professional work environment, while the outside is more for playing, but the Taichi is more than the sum of its parts. You can use the second screen as second monitor, because you can have them display the same screen or a different one. For example, you can have slide-show playing on the outside for others to watch, while the presenter also has notes on the inside screen. ASUS also added a third option, Screen Share, which lets you view files on the desktop or the other screen. You switch in the special Taichi menu that you open by pressing a blue button on the keyboard.
