Router with fan
The fact that you can put a hard disk inside the Netgear WNDR4700 has resulted in that the interior doesn't look quite the same as conventional routers. You can clearly see that on the pictures below. In addition to the SATA port, Netgear also built in a fan. The implementation of that fan doesn't seem to be thought all the way through, because the fan always turns even if there is no hard disk present. The result is that you can clearly hear the WNDR4700, which of course is unusual for routers. In the metre cupboard that doesn't matter, but it's not as practical for the living room. As far as we could tell it's not possible to disable the fan.
Netgear used Atheros wireless chips, the AR9380 provides both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. The switch is also from Atheros, the AR8327. The CPU is one we haven't seen before, an Applied Micro APM82181. The IDT 89HPES4T4 that's also present is an I/O switch, necessary for the double USB port and the SD card reader. The router has 128 MB Hynix flash memory and 256 MB DDR2 Nanya RAM.
