Plextor M5 Pro Xtreme 256GB / M5S 256GB SSD review: one is cheap, the other faster?

One is cheaper, but is the other one faster?

By

Introduction

Last September we reviewed the Plextor M5 Pro 256 SSD, which was built around the new Marvell 88SS9187 controller. At the time it was the fastest SSD, a title it wasn't able to keep for very long after the Samsung 840 Pro and OCZ Vector were introduced. Recently Plextor released new firmware for the SSD, and updated the name to M5 Pro Xtreme. Reason enough to put this SSD through our benchmarks one more time.

But there's more news from Plextor. For a while now the M5S SSDs have been available, which are new budget models. That one is more affordable, and the price per gigabyte is close to that of the Samsung 830 and Crucial m4.

In this review we will test both the M5 Pro 256 GB and the M5S 256 GB.

The Plextor M5 Pro was upgraded with 'Xtreme' firmware.
