Introduction

Club 3D is the first manufacturer to send us their own Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. We tested this royalAce to find out whether it's better than the other Radeon HD 7970s.

Late June AMD introduced the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition, a new and faster iteration of the Radeon HD 7970 with a GPU running at 1000 MHz (instead of 925 MHz). It also has a Turbo feature that raises the clock speed to 1050 MHz when possible. This GHz Edition is AMD's answer to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 680. As you can read in our review AMD has made sure it again can claim to have the fastest single-CPU graphics card. The price of the GHz Edition is also in line with the GTX 680, and will cost around £399. It does have 3 GB instead of 2 GB video memory.

The various AMD partners weren't exactly holding their breath waiting for a new card, since most of them already have a significantly overclocked Radeon HD 7970 in their line-up. Nevertheless, the first official GHz Edition cards are beginning to trickle in. From Club 3D we received their new Radeon HD 7970 royalAce, which has taken the clock frequencies a step further. It will be available for around £399.
