Sony Bravia HX850: great picture quality for a good price

Improved engine, updated design and an excellent screen

Unlike previous years, Sony has only released a handful of new televisions this year. In the mid-range and high-end segment they released one new model for each of those categories, namely the Sony Bravia HX750 and the Bravia HX850. First we will review the higher-end HX850, and check back next week for the review of the HX750.

Sony Bravia KDL-55HX850

Those familiar with Sony's products will notice that there is no new HX9XX model on the horizon. The HX920, their top model from 2011, has yet to be replaced and is still available. The new HX850 is also positioned below last year's HX920, and like previous HX8XX models the new model comes with edge-lit LED backlight instead of the full LED local dimming system of the flagship model. The HX850 is the direct follow-up to the HX820. Compared to their predecessors, the new 40HX850, 46HX850 and 55HX850 feature improvements that should improve image quality, while the prices are lower. The 55-inch KDL-55HX850 we tested costs a bit under £1,600.
