When you want to assemble a basic PC system, you have no use for numerous PCI-Express slots, SATA connectors and special overclocking features. So how much do you need to spend for a good motherboard that provides all the basics without a bunch of superfluous stuff? Which board is the best choice?

During this year's CeBIT in the beginning of March, MSI announced it was developing a new line of motherboards aimed specifically at gamers. They're based on existing boards, but have different cooling and a number of gamer-oriented hardware features. We tested the first one in the series called Z77A-GD65 Gaming.

Several images have surfaced on the internet revealing ASUS' motherboard line-up for Intel's upcoming Haswell chips. The photos show the Maximus VI Extreme, Maximus VI Hero, Maximus VI Gene Z, Sabertooth Z87, Gryphon Z87, Z87 Deluxe Pro, Deluxe, Pro, Plux and Z87i-Deluxe.

Aside from the Z87 MPower Max motherboard, MSI's trusty GD-series will also make a return. Photos of the Z87-GD65 Gaming have surfaced and reveal a Sound Blaster Core chip, which should improve on the 7.1-channel audio quality. The chipset is situated beneath a red and black heatsink, which is adorned with a dragon.
