Teac has introduced a new optical drive capable of both reading and writing single layer and dual layer Blu-ray discs (BD). Teac is a professional brand that is mostly involved with the development of recording and audio equipment. The Teac BD-W512GSA burner can read universal CDs (48x), DVDs (16x) and rewritable BDs (8x). The latter type of disc can also be written at 12x speed. Only BD-XL discs are incompatible with the new SATA optical drive. Teac's new Blu-ray drive is intended for both business and consumer use.
In addition to the regular black version, a white bulk edition will be available. Consumers looking to purchase the retail version, which includes software, manual, mounting material and cables, will have to do with the black model. It's unclear which software is bundled with the drive. The retail version has a recommended price of €79 (£65).
