Gigabyte has announced the U2142, a device which combines a laptop with a tablet. The system is mostly a laptop with a screen that can be both tilted and rotated, allowing it to be folded over the keyboard and thus creating a tablet. The device features an 11.6/inch screen with a 1366x768 pixel resolution. As with normal tablets, multi-touch input is supported.
The U2142 runs on Windows 8 and is powered by an Intel Core i3 or Core i5 "Ivy Bridge" processor, combined with up to 16 GB of memory. Buyers can opt between a 1 TB hard disk and a 256 GB SSD when speed and reliability are preferred. At 1.3 kg, the hybrid device weighs roughly the same as a light Ultrabook. Connectivity includes HDMI and USB 3.0. For network communications, Bluetooth 4.0 and 3.5G are available, in addition to Wi-Fi.
Gigabyte's U2142 tablet and Ultrabook will be released simultaneously with Windows 8, at a price of $1000 (£625).
