Synology has updated the software for its NAS devices. The new Disk Station Manager version 4.1 is still in beta, so it's not recommended for business use yet. Synology has another warning: the upgrade to DSM 4.1 is irreversible. However, for those without mission critical applications, the new software has plenty of added features, such as an 'audio station' with DS audio, which allows users to stream music to AirPlay-compatible devices in the home network. iOS devices can also cache music from the Synology NAS with DSM 4.1 beta, meaning music can be listened to on-the-go without requiring an active network connection.

Another feature is Cloud Station, which can be used to store data, encrypt it and synchronize with a system in the network. This functionality is compatible with PC, Mac and even some mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones. Files in shared folders are automatically pushed onto all devices, ensuring you'll always have the latest version of important documents available to you. In essence it's your very own personal Dropbox or Google Drive service.

Also present is Surveillance Station 6, which has a completely revamped interface. When combined with a network camera, the program registers movement and sends notifications when movement is detected at irregular times or places. This functionality is especially helpful for businesses but can also be used as added protection in and around the house.

DSM 4.1 beta will also have a 'Package Center', which should make it easier to exchange files in teams or in a small business, as well as store them in a central location. Photo enthusiasts will also enjoy DSM 4.1, which allows photos to be grouped by location, subject or in a timeline. Synology has also simplified adding locations to photos. Apart from adding galleries to the home network, they can also be shared with friends and family over the internet.

An overview of all features and functionality can be found on Synology's website. A live demonstration is also available there. The new Disk Station Manager 4.1 can be downloaded from various Synology servers. A British mirror is also available.
