For a long time it was thought that Virtual Reality glasses would become extremely popular to watch movies with and play videogames. The technology seemed right out of Star Trek but due to high prices and low resolutions Virtual Reality never really took off, despite brave attempts by various companies.

With the surge of 3D glasses in mind, Silicon Micro Display attempts to revitalize the concept of VR. This time, a modern resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels is supported. Apart from 2D and 3D images, the new ST1080 glasses are also capable of displaying  "augmented reality", which are virtual images overlaid on top of the real world. The device can be recharged by USB.

Silicon Micro Display's new ST1080 glasses are now shipping and cost no less than $799 (£506), making it unlikely to become a popular product.
