Owners of a Mac Mini can now equip their device with a Blu-ray player. Amex Digital has released a special kit, which can be installed by all users. The replacing slot-in SATA drive reads Blu-ray discs at 4x (single layer) or 2x (dual layer).
The drive is also compatible with DVD's and CD's. Writing single layer DVD's is done at 8x, while dual layer discs can be burned at speeds of up to 4x. The drive is not capable of writing to Blu-ray discs.
Since Mac OS X does not yet support the playback of encrypted Blu-ray movies, this is only possible to users running Windows by means of the Boot Camp software. Unprotected videos can easily be played using software such as VLC Player. Amex Digital has specified a 199 USD pricetag for its Blu-ray upgrade kit; this does not include any software.
